GoDaddy Website Builder compared

GoDaddy Website Builder is a fine first website. Here is where a bookkeeping firm outgrows it.

If you registered a domain last week and you need a name, a phone number and a contact form live before your first referral calls, GoDaddy Website Builder is a reasonable answer and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The domain is already in the account, the editor is in the same login, and you can be online in an afternoon without talking to anybody. The trouble starts later, and it starts quietly. A firm that wants a page for cleanup work, a page for ecommerce sellers and a page for construction clients finds it is now writing and maintaining all of them itself, in a builder whose page speed it does not control, and nobody is watching whether the contact form still delivers.

The short answerVerdict

Excellent for a brand new solo bookkeeper who needs a real page online this afternoon. Thin once the firm needs service pages, client-industry pages and somebody else doing the upkeep.

What the builder actually is

GoDaddy Website Builder is a hosted, template-driven site editor sold alongside domain registration and email. You pick a layout, drop in sections, type your copy and publish, all inside the same account that already holds your domain. Hosting, SSL and the publishing pipeline are handled for you, and there is no server, no plugin list and no deployment step to understand. It is designed to remove every obstacle between a small business owner and a live page, and at that specific job it is good.

  • The domain, the email and the editor sit behind one login, so nothing has to be pointed at anything
  • Section-based templates mean a working page exists before you write a word
  • Hosting, SSL and updates to the platform itself are handled without you thinking about them
  • Cheap enough that a firm with no revenue yet can justify it on day one
  • Truly same-day: a solo bookkeeper can be findable before the end of the afternoon

Speed and Core Web VitalsPages are assembled by the platform runtime at view time, so speed is largely set by the template and the blocks you chose rather than by anything you can tune.Hand-built pages with almost no client JavaScript, served from the edge and held to a 90+ PageSpeed score on mobile and desktop before we hand the site over.
SEO controlTitles, descriptions and basic settings are editable, which covers the essentials. What you do not get is a structured way to build out dozens of service and industry pages that link to each other.A page for every service and a page for every client industry you serve, each with its own title, description, heading structure and internal links back to the services it supports.
Schema and structured dataSome basic markup is emitted by the platform. Anything specific to a bookkeeping engagement is yours to research, write and keep in step with the page.Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and WebSite markup generated from the same data files that render the page, so the two cannot drift apart.
AEO and GEO readinessA template site reads like a brochure, which gives an assistant very little it can quote when somebody asks it to recommend a bookkeeper in their state.Answer-first paragraphs, question-shaped headings, visible FAQs that match their schema, plus llms.txt and llms-full.txt so assistants read clean facts about your firm.
Hosting and securityIncluded and managed, with SSL handled for you. This is a genuine strength of the product and one less thing for a solo firm to think about.Managed hosting on a global network with SSL, CDN, DDoS protection and unmetered bandwidth, all inside the monthly fee with nothing billed separately.
Maintenance burdenLight but permanent. Nothing breaks on its own, and equally nothing improves on its own. New hours, a new service, a new team member: all of it is your evening.Weekly detail updates keep hours, team, services and service areas current. Nobody at your firm ever logs in, and requests go through a client portal.
Who does the workYou, or a family member, or whoever at the firm is least unwilling. That is fine at the start and it is the first thing to slip once the client load grows. We do, including the writing. Revisions are included at 5 a month with no size limit on any one request, each turned around in 2 to 5 working days.
Content and articlesA blog feature exists. Nothing fills it, and a bookkeeping firm three weeks into busy season is not going to fill it either.Researched articles of 2,500 to 3,200 words each, written about how a business owner actually chooses a bookkeeper, published with the on-page work already done.
Design qualityClean and tidy out of the box. The constraint is that everyone starts from the same section library, so firms in the same city often arrive at very similar pages.Designed around your firm, your services and your client mix, so the site does not resemble the two other firms a prospect has open in adjacent tabs.
Accessibility and compliance pagesA privacy page is usually as far as it goes, and cookie handling is typically a banner rather than anything that actually gates a script.Privacy policy, terms, cookie policy with consent that genuinely gates scripts, an accessibility statement and a plain notice that we do not give accounting advice.
Cost modelThe cheapest credible option in this comparison, usually a small monthly or annual charge, often bundled with a domain you already pay for. From $137 a month with the domain and hosting inside it, plus a one-time $797 build fee invoiced only after the site is live and approved.
Ownership and lock-inThe domain is yours and portable. The site itself is not: the layout and the blocks live in the platform and do not travel to another system. One free domain registered in your own name from the start. If you ever leave, tell us where to send it and we transfer it at no charge.

Choose GoDaddy BuilderHonestly

When the builder is genuinely the right choice

A managed site is the wrong purchase for a firm that does not yet know what it sells. If you registered the business this quarter, you have three clients from your old employer and your entire marketing plan is a phone number people can find, the builder does that job for very little money and you should use it. Come back when the shape of the firm has settled.

  • A brand new solo practice that needs a name, a number and a form online today
  • A firm whose work arrives entirely by referral and word of mouth, with no search ambition yet
  • Anyone still testing whether the practice is going to be full time
  • A firm that already pays for the domain and email there and wants nothing else to manage
  • A temporary placeholder while a bigger decision about the practice gets made
Choose LedgerWebStudioWhere we win

The four moments a firm outgrows it

The limits do not announce themselves. They show up as a prospect who never called, a page that never ranked and a form that quietly stopped delivering for a fortnight. In practice four things push a firm off a builder, and they tend to arrive together as the practice starts hiring.

  • You want to be found for specific work, such as catch-up bookkeeping or ecommerce reconciliation in your state, which needs a real page per service and per client industry
  • A prospect opens your site on a phone between meetings, and page speed is now the difference between a call and a closed tab
  • You need qualified inquiries rather than a bare contact form, so intake has to capture entity type, transaction volume band and payroll headcount and route into your CRM
  • Nobody at the firm has time to keep it current, and the site has slowly gone out of date without anyone noticing
02

How switching actually works, including the domain

Moving off a builder is less dramatic than firms expect, because the two things worth keeping are both portable. We rebuild the site rather than importing it, since the point is to leave the template behind, but your content, your inquiries and your search history come with you. You keep control of the domain throughout and there is no window where the phone number is not online.

  • We copy across the content worth keeping: services, bios, testimonials, client logos and anything a prospect actually reads
  • Every old URL gets a redirect to its new page, so links from directories, referral partners and existing search results keep working
  • The domain either stays where it is and points at the new site, or moves to us at no charge, registered in your own name either way
  • Your contact form is replaced by an engagement scope request that captures entity type, transaction volume band and payroll headcount, routed into your CRM by API, Zapier or Make
  • The old site stays live until the new one is approved, so the switch is a single cutover rather than a gap

What firms report

Firms that made this exact move

  • STATEMENT 01Illustrative
The chat catches questions at nine at night and books the call before anyone here has seen the message. We stopped losing leads in the gap between a form landing and somebody on our team getting to it the next morning.

Our old site was accurate the week it launched and slowly stopped being true. Somebody else keeps the services, the team and the hours current now, and the only thing I do is read the note saying what changed.

Questions about GoDaddy Website Builder

01I already pay for GoDaddy hosting and email. Do I have to cancel them?

No. Email and domain registration are separate products from the site builder, and plenty of our clients keep their mailboxes exactly where they are. The only thing that changes is where the website itself is served from. If you would rather consolidate, the free domain included in the plan can cover it, but nothing forces that.

02Will I lose my search rankings if I move off the builder?

Not if the move is done properly, and this is the main thing redirects exist for. Every old URL is mapped to its new page before launch, so a search engine following an old result lands on the right content rather than an error. Firms usually see rankings hold and then improve, because the new pages are faster and there are more of them.

03Can I keep editing my own pages after the switch?

You will not need to, and that is deliberate. Nobody at your firm logs in. Changes are requested through the client portal and we make them, which takes the job off whoever at the practice had been squeezing it in. If hands-on editing is something you actively want, a builder is the better fit and we will say so.

04My builder site works fine. Why would a bookkeeping firm pay more?

Because a working site and a site that wins engagements are different things. A builder site is a business card that happens to be online. What a growing firm needs is a page for each service, a page for each client industry, intake that qualifies the inquiry, and someone keeping all of it current while the firm does client work.

05How long does the migration take?

Launch is 7 on Intake, 10 on Reconciliation and 15 on Filed. The clock starts at the onboarding call rather than at purchase, and your existing site stays up the entire time, so nothing goes dark while the new one is built.

06Do you take the content from my existing site or start over?

Both, in the right proportions. Copy that reflects how your firm actually works gets carried across and tightened. The structure is rebuilt, because the thing holding a builder site back is usually that it is five generic pages when it needs thirty specific ones.

07Is a template site bad for SEO by itself?

No, and it is worth being precise here. A template does not carry a penalty. The problem is structural: a five-page template site has no page about bookkeeping for restaurants, so there is nothing for that search to match. Slow mobile pages then make the same problem worse for the searches you do compete in.

08What if I just add more pages in the builder myself?

That genuinely works if you have the hours. A firm that writes thirty well-structured pages in any builder will do better than a firm that writes five anywhere. The question is whether the partner writing them would rather be reconciling accounts, and whether those pages will still be accurate next March.

09Who owns the domain after the move?

You do, registered in your own name rather than ours. This is the single most important thing to get right when leaving any platform. If you later decide to leave us, you tell us where to send it and we transfer it at no charge, with no retention conversation attached.

10What happens to my old contact form submissions?

Existing submissions stay wherever they currently land, typically an inbox, and we do not touch that history. Going forward, form entries route into your CRM by API, Zapier or Make the moment they are submitted, so a new inquiry becomes a record rather than an email somebody has to remember to act on.
